Welcome!

Hello there! And welcome to Tasting Notes - the wool decanted blog. I’m Linda, the knitting partner in our partnership - and the designated blogger. I’ve been thinking hard about how we can make the best use of our time together on these pages, kind reader.

We should start with an explanation of our brand name, wool decanted. I suspect that’s what brought you to this page to start with.

wool decanted

Strange name you’re thinking - although if you’ve read the home page you’ll be getting the gist. Lisa and I are wine lovers and now we’re wool adventurers! It intrigued us to learn how similar the wine and wool industries are in very many respects. The raw materials, grapes and sheep fleeces, reflect the environment in which they are grown. Tremendous care and hard work goes into tending the grapes and the sheep fleeces. Then skilled craftspeople turn these raw materials into wonderful finished products. Because of the live source of the raw material, a single batch of wool is unique. Like a single batch of wine. Neither will be exactly the same as the next batch, even from the same sheep or grapevine. It’s fascinating and exciting.

So why wool decanted you ask………

So why wool decanted you ask………

The wine industry is pretty good at celebrating its produce. Wine lovers care about the provenance of their wine. They decant it from the bottle, absorbing its flavours and aromas before drinking it. They show wine appreciation through this custom. Why not encourage knitters (and other crafters) to celebrate your British wool in this way? The sheep who grew it, the farmer who tended them, the mills that made it, the dyers who coloured it.

Our name, wool decanted, is a good description of how we will present our wool to lovely people like you. You can decant it from its label, which will have lots of useful information about it. Just like a good wine label! You’ve also read all about it on this website. So by the time you make something beautiful with it, you’ll have come to know your wool very well indeed. And now you’ve become part of our wool adventure! That’s also a bit better than the wine journey - because you’re holding a handmade treasure that will last a lifetime. But when the wine’s gone - it’s gone!!

I hope that’s given you a short summary of why we’ve chosen quite an unusual brand name for our wool. You’ll see the wine/wool analogy used throughout our materials but we’ll try not to overdo it.

Thank you for reading this far. What else would be a good use of our time together on these pages. Let’s explain why we’ve chosen British wool. Check out our next post.

If you’ve got any suggestions for what you’d like to hear about on these pages don’t hesitate to let me know.

Looking forward to our next chat

Linda
